Chapter 3: Informing and Involving the Public

Action:

Build awareness and understanding among residents and visitors about Lake Champlain Basin resources and behaviors that contribute to pollution.

Task

Conduct education forums in target watersheds to educate stakeholders about priority surface water issues and engage partners in implementing high-priority water-quality strategies in conjunction with DEC’s Basin planning effort.

The Department hosted numerous forums for water quality education and in support of the development of Tactical Basin Plans. Multiple meetings and forums were held in the South Lake Champlain, Winooski, Otter Creek, North Lake Champlain direct, and Missisquoi Bay watersheds. New Basin Plans were issued for the Otter Creek and Winooski River Basins during 2012, and a public release of the long-awaited Missisquoi Bay Basin Plan is anticipated by the end of 2012.
